Black Friday falls on 27 November this year, and many South Africans will be tempted by deals on phones, appliances and gifts. Some retailers and lenders push store accounts, buy-now-pay-later plans and quick cash loans at exactly this time. A discount only counts as a saving if you can repay what you borrow without falling behind. Borrowing at 20% or more to buy something that is 15% off can cost you more than you save.

Before you borrow, work out three numbers: the full price after interest and fees, the monthly instalment, and how long you will be paying. Compare the cash price with the credit price, and check whether the “deal” is available without credit. Be careful with offers that say “approved in minutes” and ask for payment or banking details upfront, as scammers copy real promotions at this time of year.

If you do need credit, borrow only what you can repay comfortably, choose an NCR-registered provider, and read the agreement before signing. You are allowed to ask for a pre-agreement quote. Remember that missed payments can lower your credit score and make future borrowing more expensive.
